Te Urewera National Park and Lake Waikaremoana

Located in the ruggedly beautiful Te Urewera, Lake Waikaremoana is a freshwater fishing mecca and home to one of New Zealand's Great Walks. Formed approximately 2200 years ago by a massive landslide, the lake's pristine waters are teeming with rainbow and brown trout, offering excellent fishing for those with a Rotorua Trout Fishing District Licence. The 46-kilometre Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk traces the lake's edge, winding through ancient natural forest and secluded beaches, where you might spot or hear up to 35 fully protected native bird species. Beyond fishing and hiking, the area also attracts hunters, with guided trips available for pig and deer.
