Just a hop down the coast is Tairua and your first stop should be Paku Hill (the extinct volcanic cone) which offers spectacular views over the natural harbour and the Pacific Ocean.  Just a short drive from Tairua you reach the holiday destination of Whangamata, popular with locals for the great conditions for water sports, particularly surfing.  From there head inland through the spectacular Karangahake Gorge, if time allows take in some of the gorge walks.  Heading south you pass through Paeroa home of our national soft drink L&P, then Te Aroha an historic spa town.  From there you travel through Matamata, gateway to Hobbiton, then the township of Tirau, home to a giant tin sheep and sheepdog, as well as bric-a-brac, art, craft and antique stores. Further south and you reach Putaruru, the nearby Te Waihou Walkway will take you to the Blue Spring, the water is so pristine that it is the source of much of New Zealand’s bottled water.  Continue south and you pass through the mill town of Tokoroa.   Just north of the Taupo are the Huka Falls and a short detour to view is highly recommended. The Huka Jet can get you much closer with a thrilling jet boat ride also if you wish.  Craters of the Moon is a nearby geothermal reserve with good walking tracks around its many pools and steaming vents.  Lake Taupo is actually a volcanic caldera formed following a massive eruption in the year 186 and is considered to be one of the most massive and violent eruptions known.  The town itself is a lively place with many shops, bars and cafes all catering for the traveller and visitor. A whole host of activities can be undertaken here such as bungy jumping, sky diving, fishing for trout in the lake and rivers, kayaking, sailing, horse riding and walking and hiking to name but a few.

The excitement continues right up to the base of the foaming Huka Falls, where you get a spectacular water level view to New Zealand's most visited natural attraction. Nothing compares to watching 220,000 litres per second tumbling over the cliff face towards you. The water from the mighty Huka Falls runs down the Waikato River through a series of Hydro Power Stations. You'll get a view of the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station in the comfort of a powerful Chevrolet V8 jet boat. This unique Geothermal Power Station uses underground geothermal activity to produce hot steamy water. The Waikato Rivers beautiful environment is varied and unique and is New Zealand's longest river flowing north from our largest lake - Lake Taupō.

Follow the edge of Lake Taupo for the short scenic drive to the small township of Turangi, which sits on the southern shores of Lake Taupo and is rated as one of the world's best trout fishing locations. For a side trip continue south of Turangi, where you can visit the National Trout Centre run by the Department of Conservation, here you can explore the process of hatching trout to stock New Zealand's rivers and lakes. Leaving State Highway 1 at Turangi, you have a short drive to Tongariro National Park.  Just on the park boundary you reach Lake Rotopounamu (Greenstone Lake).  Here a short 15 minute walk through the forest brings you to the lake, a lovely spot for swimming, walking (on the 5km lake track) or just relaxing.   Continue along Highway 47 which takes you into Tongariro National Park. Tongariro is New Zealand's oldest national park, established in 1887 after the Maori chief Te Heuheu Tukino IV gifted the sacred peaks to the nation. It was also only the fourth place on earth to be given recognition as a World Heritage area. At the heart of the park are three volcanoes, Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe. Despite the barren and sometimes inhospitable environment, the region abounds with flora and fauna. Alpine herbs and flaxes thrive on the upper slopes while dense beech forests cover the lower regions. New Zealand's only native mammals, the short and long tailed bat make their homes here.  The Tongariro Crossing is one of New Zealand's Great Walks and there are many other tracks and trails to suit all abilities. Also lying within the park are two of New Zealand's largest ski fields, Whakapapa and Turoa.
